White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that President Donald Trump firmly believes the ball is in China’s court when it comes to negotiating the trade war between the two countries.

“I do have an additional statement that he just shared with me in the Oval Office,” Leavitt said from the press briefing podium. “‘The ball is in China’s court. China needs to make a deal with us. We don’t have to make a deal with them. There’s no difference between China and any other country, except that they are much larger, and China wants what we have, what every country wants, what we have: The American consumer, or to put it another way, they need our money.’”

“The president, again, has made it quite clear that he’s open to a deal with China,” Leavitt added. “So China needs to make a deal with the United States of America.”

Two Belgian teenagers were charged Tuesday with wildlife piracy after they were found with thousands of ants packed in test tubes in what Kenyan authorities said was part of a trend in trafficking smaller and lesser known species.

Lornoy David and Seppe Lodewijckx, two 19-year-olds who were arrested on April 5 with 5,000 ants at a guest house, appeared distraught during their appearance before a magistrate in Nairobi and were comforted in the courtroom by relatives. They told the magistrate they were collecting the ants for fun and did not know that it was illegal.

In a separate criminal case, Kenyan Dennis Ng’ang’a and Vietnamese Duh Hung Nguyen also were charged with illegal trafficking in the same courtroom, following their arrest while in possession of 400 ants.

The Kenya Wildlife Service said the four men were involved in trafficking the ants to markets in Europe and Asia, and that the species included messor cephalotes, a distinctive, large and red-colored harvester ant native to East Africa.

The illegal export of the ants “not only undermines Kenya’s sovereign rights over its biodiversity but also deprives local communities and research institutions of potential ecological and economic benefits,” KWS said in a statement.

President Donald Trump’s turbulent trade war could put the Federal Reserve in a difficult situation it hasn’t seen in about half a century, Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday.

“The level of the tariff increases announced so far is significantly larger than anticipated,” the central bank head said in prepared remarks for an event hosted by the Economic Club of Chicago. “We may find ourselves in the challenging scenario in which our dual-mandate goals are in tension.”

The Fed is responsible for promoting full employment and keeping inflation in check, but Trump’s tariffs threaten both of those goals. For now, however, the US economy remains in decent shape, according to the latest data, allowing the Fed to be patient.

Powell said the Fed’s best move for the moment is to stand pat until the data clearly shows how the US economy is responding to Trump’s policies. Other Fed officials have said as much in recent speeches, saying they can shift rates in either direction, depending on what the economy needs.

But it’s only a matter of time until Trump’s tariffs stoke inflation, push up unemployment and weaken economic growth, according to most economists, especially if the massive “reciprocal” tariffs that went into effect briefly on April 9 are put back in place. Trump delayed that historic hike in import taxes until July.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is threatening to strip Harvard University of its ability to enroll international students if it doesn’t turn over records on international students’ “illegal and violent activities,” the agency said Wednesday.

Noem “wrote a scathing letter demanding detailed records on Harvard’s foreign student visa holders’ illegal and violent activities by April 30, 2025, or face immediate loss of Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification,” DHS said in a news release.

The certification allows universities to issue forms to admitted international students that they can then use to apply for visas to enter the United States, according to DHS.

With 6,793 international students attending Harvard, they comprise 27.2% of its enrollment in the 2024-25 academic year, according to the university’s data.

The long-simmering showdown between President Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is heating up.

Trump on Thursday morning lashed out at the Fed leader in a social media post for not cutting interest rates, saying the central bank is lagging behind its European counterpart.

“Jerome Powell of the Fed, who is always TOO LATE AND WRONG, yesterday issued a report which was another, and typical, complete ‘mess!’ Trump wrote. “Powell’s termination cannot come fast enough!”

Uit vrees voor de recessie heeft de ECB de rente verlaagd vandaag.
Trump, die alleen maar op zeer simplistische wijze kan redeneren, ziet hierin de bevestiging dat ook de FED de rente moet verlagen om een recessie te vermijden. Trump snapt niet dat hij met zijn tarieven in een andere situatie zit dan de rest van de wereld. De US is zo inflatoir als het maar kan zijn. De FED rente verlagen, maakt het nog zoveel erger

Vandaar: Trump moet nodig Powell ontslaan. Go Trump, go. Zet daar een mannetje van jou en rijd de US economisch direct in de afgrond. Geen reden om dat uit te stellen

Het is een ingewikkelde juridische kwestie of Trump Powell kan ontslaan.

Maar aangezien Trump zelfs een bevel van de Supreme Court dat 9-0 gestemd is (!!!) naast zich neerlegt, kan Trump zeker Powell ontslaan.

Het feit dat de Supreme Court het mogelijk acht dat Powell niet ontslagen kan worden (zonder goede reden) maakt Trump zeker: ik ontsla Powell.

Hoeveel dagen geven we Powell nog?
(Als dat gebeurt, verwacht je dan maar aan tuimelende beurzen en sterk stijgende rentevoeten want Powell wordt beschouwd als de man die de US economisch rechthoudt tijdens Trumps waanzin)

Independence is a matter of law," said Powell, pointing out Fed governors are not removable, except for cause. But he did talk about a Supreme Court case - Trump v. Wilcox - in which the justices will determine whether the president can fire commissioners from independent agencies.

"I don't think that that decision will apply to the Fed but I don't know. It's a situation we're monitoring carefully," he said.

Trump's solicitor general, D. John Sauer, in a Supreme Court filing on the Wilcox case seemed to agree with Powell.

"While respondents focus heavily on other agencies such as the Federal Reserve Board, they ignore Seila Law's observation that the Federal Reserve's tenure protection presents a distinct question with a uniquehistorical pedigree," said Sauer. "That question is not at issue here."

Analysts at Evercore led by Krishna Guha said the ruling will be critical.

"It is difficult to overstate the consequences at this stressed moment of a Court ruling that found that President Trump - who has just tweeted saying Powell's termination cannot come soon enough - does have the authority to dismiss the heads of independent agencies and did not establish a clear carve-out for the Fed," they said in a note.

It should be noted that, for now, the market still doesn't expect Powell's termination. On the prediction market Polymarket, the odds Trump will remove Powell this year rose as high as 19 cents on the dollar, up slightly from 16 cents.

Powell gave Trump plenty of ammunition for criticism during Wednesday's speech, saying the tariffs imposed by Trump were much higher than expected and were likely to put upward pressure on inflation as well as weigh on growth. Trump also said the tariffs could put the Fed's dual mandate in conflict.

"Without having a better idea of underlying economic trends and clear understanding of how tariffs will impact growth and inflation going forward, Powell and company pretty much have their hands tied, while being stuck between a rock (inflation) and a hard place (growth risks)," said Tom Essaye of the Sevens Report.
