Canada
Trump, who on Tuesday imposed 25% tariffs on almost all imports from Canada (10% on energy), has repeatedly said this year that the US has a “$200 billion” trade deficit with Canada – sometimes making the claim explicitly and sometimes using vaguer language about a supposed $200 billion subsidy or loss to Canada.
Trump’s number is not even close to correct. The new federal statistics show the 2024 deficit with Canada in goods and services trade was $35.7 billion, down from $40.6 billion in 2023.
Mexico
Trump also imposed 25% tariffs on products imported from Mexico. He said in a Fox News interview in February, “We have a deficit with Mexico of $350 billion.”
Again, that’s distant from reality. The new federal figures show the 2024 deficit with Mexico in goods and services trade was $179 billion, up from $162.1 billion in 2023.
The 2024 deficit with Mexico in goods trade alone was $181.5 billion, up from $161.4 billion in 2023.
China
Trump, who has imposed a series of tariffs in his first and second presidential terms on products imported from China, said in a Fox News Radio interview in February that “we have a deficit with China of over $1 trillion.” He repeated the “$1 trillion” number in a February speech.
That, too, is a massive exaggeration. The new federal figures show that the 2024 deficit with China in goods and services trade was $263.3 billion. That’s up from $252.1 billion in 2023 – but lower than in every year of Trump’s first presidency.
European Union
Trump has regularly, and incorrectly, castigated the European Union over its trade practices. He told reporters in February that “with the European Union, it’s, you know, $350 billion deficit.” He said at a subsequent February event that it’s “about a $300 billion deficit with the European Union.”
Wrong once more. The new federal figures show that the 2024 deficit with the European Union in goods and services trade was $161.1 billion, up from $125.1 billion in 2023.

EU-landen bereiken zonder Hongarije akkoord over steun Oekraïne
Op de Europese top in Brussel hebben alle EU-lidstaten een akkoord bereikt over het versterken van de Europese defensie. 26 van de 27 lidstaten zijn het ook eens geraakt over de extra steun aan Oekraïne. Hongarije blijft zich daartegen verzetten.
EU-leiders spreken zonder Hongarije ook extra steun voor Oekraïne af
De leiders van de EU-landen hebben zonder Hongarije nu ook een akkoord over extra steun voor Oekraïne. De Hongaarse premier Viktor Orbán bleef zich verzetten, waarna de 26 anderen besloten zich zonder Hongarije uit te spreken. Over de versterking van de Europese defensie zijn de 27 lidstaten, ook Hongarije, het eens.
Orbán had voorafgaand aan de top al laten weten niet te willen instemmen met extra steun aan Oekraïne. Hij had in een brief aan de voorzitter van de Europese Raad António Costa al laten weten dat hij geen conclusies wilde trekken aan het einde van de top, zoals normaal wel gebeurt. De Slovaakse leider Robert Fico protesteerde ook, maar is toch akkoord gegaan met de slotverklaring.
Meloni: Oekraïne ook zonder lidmaatschap via NAVO beschermen
De Italiaanse premier Giorgia Meloni vindt dat Oekraïne de veiligheidsgaranties van de NAVO zou moeten krijgen zonder over het daadwerkelijke lidmaatschap van de militaire alliantie te beschikken. Dat berichten het Italiaanse persbureau 'Ansa' en financieel persagentschap 'Bloomberg'.
Meloni deed de uitspraken in de schaduw van de Europese topontmoeting in Brussel waar over de veiligheid van Oekraïne en Europa wordt gesproken. "We moeten nadenken over duurzamere oplossingen" dan het sturen van Europese vredestroepen naar Oekraïne. Het uitbreiden van de bepaling van artikel 5 van de NAVO — dat de lidstaten verplicht elkaar te beschermen bij een eventuele aanval — zou veel effectiever zijn, zei ze.
Het is de eerste keer dat Meloni het idee in zulke duidelijke bewoordingen steunt. Hoewel de Italiaanse premier wordt gezien als een potentieel doorgeefluik tussen Europa en Trump, is het onwaarschijnlijk dat de VS het voorstel zullen steunen.
