A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Trump administration to preserve all Signal messages exchanged in the now-infamous group chat in which officials organised a high-level military operation in Yemen that inadvertently included a journalist.

The temporary restraining order compels defense secretary Pete Hegseth, secretary of state Marco Rubio, treasury secretary Scott Bessent, CIA director John Ratcliffe and the director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, to save their texts from 11 to 15 March.

Judge orders retention of all Signal group texts
James Boasberg, the chief US district judge in Washington, ordered all messages in the group chat be preserved, adding that his decision was aimed at ensuring no messages were lost and not because he decided the Trump administration had done anything wrong.

Boasberg is set to decide at a later stage whether the disappearing message function of the Signal chat violated federal records retention laws.

Na de UK, Duitsland, Denemarken, België, ... heeft nu ook Nederland het reisadvies voor de US aangepast.

US consumer confidence hit by tariff fears

Donald Trump’s trade wars are hurting US consumer sentiment, a new survey shows, as Americans anticipate high prices from new tariffs.

US consumer sentiment has fallen to its lowest in over two years, the latest poll from the University of Michigan shows.

Its index of Consumer Sentiment fell to 57.0 this month, down from 64.7 in February, and 28% lower than a year ago. A measure of consumer expectations for the economy fell particularly sharply.

Surveys of Consumers director Joanne Hsu explains:

The expectations index plunged a precipitous 18% and has now lost more than 30% since November 2024. This month’s decline reflects a clear consensus across all demographic and political affiliations; Republicans joined independents and Democrats in expressing worsening expectations since February for their personal finances, business conditions, unemployment, and inflation.

Michigan University heeft vandaag hun diversiteitsbeleid geschrapt dat ervoor zorgt dat kansarmen ook kunnen studeren. Trump heeft liever dat kansarmen low-income, low-educated blijven. Die stemmen vooral republikeins.

Donald Trump announced that the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom has agreed to provide at least $100m in pro bono legal services to the federal government during this administration.

It is the latest example of legal firms caving in to pressure from the Trump administration, and appears to be the first instance where a firm has preemptively struck a deal to avoid Trump’s executive orders targeting law firms and attorneys who challenge his priorities, per the New York Times (paywall). It was unclear why Skadden drew Trump’s ire but Elon Musk has criticised the firm over its work in a lawsuit against a rightwing media critic, Dinesh D’Souza, according to the NYT.

NUUK, Greenland (AP) — U.S. Vice President JD Vance said Friday that Denmark has "underinvested" in Greenland’s security and demanded that Denmark change its approach as President Donald Trump pushes to take over the Danish territory.

The pointed remarks came as Vance visited U.S. troops on Pituffik Space Base on the mineral-rich, strategically critical island alongside his wife and other senior U.S. officials for a trip that was ultimately scaled back after an uproar among Greenlanders and Danes who were not consulted about the original itinerary.

“Our message to Denmark is very simple: You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” Vance said. “You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass filled with incredible people. That has to change.”

Vance said the U.S. has “no option” but to take a significant position to ensure the security of Greenland as he encouraged a push in Greenland for independence from Denmark.

US Attorney General Bondi tells Fox News many judges need to be removed

WASHINGTON, March 27 (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Thursday that many of the judges who have recently ruled against the actions of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration were unable to be impartial and needed to be removed.
"Many judges need to be removed," Bondi said during an interview on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle" show. "These judges obviously cannot be impartial. They cannot be objective."

Her comments come amid a growing conflict between the White and the federal judiciary - a branch of government created to check executive and congressional power. Federal judges are appointed for life under the Constitution to ensure their independence.
"They are district judges trying to control our entire country, our entire country, and they are trying to obstruct Donald Trump's agenda," she said.
She named three U.S. district judges that have temporarily blocked Trump administration policies including Ana Reyes, James Boasberg and Beryl Howell.
Bondi added that Boasberg, who ordered the administration to temporarily stop invoking wartime powers to deport migrants, should not be on any case involving the administration.
Trump had previously called for Boasberg's impeachment, provoking a rare rebuke from Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
"For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision," Roberts said.
